Alison Boggs write-up

On Wednesday, March 9, Alison Boggs of the Spokesman-Review came to talk to our class about working with digital media. She has worked at the paper for 22 years, but only spent the last five doing digital media coordination. The point of her current role with the organization is to promote their best stories online.

Boggs said the Spokesman-Review is seeing the fastest growth in mobile news consumption, which is mostly fueled by advertising revenue. Some of her other tasks include fixing headlines to be more search-friendly and correcting mistakes in the reporters' stories. When it comes to changing headlines, her guiding question is "how would I search for this?"

Another role Boggs fills is using social media to promote the stories. Boggs said she uses a different strategy for each platform that is meant to appeal to how users interact with the stories. This is done to get people to check out the stories, and then also try to maximize their time on the page.

To track how all of this happens, Boggs said the Spokesman-Review uses Google Analytics and Chartbeat to see how their stories do. These evaluate and report web traffic on a minute-by-minute basis. About her job, Boggs said "if you like doing stuff, it's a good job for somebody who likes to be in the middle of everything."
